there are three levels of government in the United States each with the responsibility of serving citizens in different ways each level has a special jurisdiction a jurisdiction is an area over which in a thority has control local governments serve cities towns and communities take care of city parks and make sure that police and fire departments run smoothly state governments have other responsibilities including public education as well as public health and safety the state government is responsible for what you learn at school state leaders decide what should be taught for all the public schools in the state States also have their own budget so they can make sure schools have enough money for tables chairs supplies and books the federal government is responsible for keeping us safe by training members of the military and sending people to meet with leaders of other countries the federal government is also in charge of money the federal government also takes care of national parks and monuments each level of government must do its part to keep things running smoothly the federal and state governments are made up of three branches or parts the legislative branch the executive branch and the judicial branch each branch has different responsibilities and can check or limit the powers the other two the legislative branch is the part of government responsible for making laws in our federal government the legislative branch is made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives together these two formed the United States Congress meet in the Capitol building in Washington DC California's legislative branch is made up of the state senate and the State Assembly together the state senate and the State Assembly are called the state Fletcher the state legislature meets at the state capitol in Sacramento the executive branch is the part of government responsible for carrying out laws in the federal government the president of the United States leads the executive branch in state government the governor is the top leader at the state and federal levels the president and the have the power to sign bills into laws once they're approved Governors signed bills that are given to them by the state legislatures leaders of the executive branch is also have the power to veto or reject bills did you dishel branch is the part of government responsible for deciding if laws have been broken there are courts in both the state and federal governments the highest court in our country is the Supreme Court Supreme Court cases involve deciding whether or not a law is defined in the Constitution nine justices or judges serve on the Supreme Court each level of government has different response but they depend on each other to govern effectively for instance each level of government works to help keep you safe local governments have police officers and firefighters to help keep us safe in our towns and cities the California Highway Patrol State Police Force make sure people drive safely on state roads and the federal government maintains the United States military to defend and protect our country even though each level of government works in a different way they all work for the same goal to protect us and our rights
