in the year 1271 a European Merchant named Marco Polo set off on a journey to Asia he returned to Italy 24 years later with Tales of unimaginable riches in the east a book about his travels caused many more Europeans to become curious about Faraway lands and the they had to offer was a simple I tell you know they in the air passes that there do not enter the city 1000 cartloads of silk alone how much I make with these Silk N Go and other Goods the Exotic Goods that Polo described were carried by Traders along the Silk Road a route that linked China and Europe travel along the Route was dangerous Traders bad weather illness and thieves trouble became even more difficult when the Turks of the Ottoman Empire captured the city of Constantinople in 1453 and blocked one of the routes to Asia these problems LED European traders to look for another way to travel to Asia by sea advances in navigational technology made travel by sea easier safer for sailors trade with other countries brought Europeans do tools that help them navigate navigation is a science used by Sailors to figure out where they are and plan their route the magnetic compass invented in China about Sailors to know exactly which way was North the astrolabe helped Sailors to measure the height of the sun and stars this help them determine latitude or the distance north or south of the Equator usually measured in degrees what's the date of new technologies along with maps and charts sea travel became easier but despite these advancements the only way to find fast safer trade routes was through exploration and exploration was expensive so kings and queens were often sought out as sponsors it was generally expected that these Expeditions would return with Goods of Great Value such as gold back the cost of the Expedition Prince Henry of Portugal sponsor voyages along the west coast of Africa those Journeys played a role in helping the Portuguese find the way around Africa to India in 1499 in 1492 italian-born Christopher Columbus with the support of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain set out on a journey to find a route to Asia by sailing west instead of East never found a trade route to Asia but he did visit land such as present-day Cuba and Puerto Rico both of these were new lands to the Europeans other explorers who had a similar adventurous Spirit as Christopher Columbus made Voyages of Their Own enticed by rumors of golden City's Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado set out to explore Southwestern North America the area known today as California and Mexico Coronado never found the gold he was seeking most explorers and the rulers who sponsored their voyages or seeking great wealth and the power that went with it however the traditions of Coronado and others like him often had different results as Europeans learned of the new lands to the west or what song called the new world they began moving to settling in establishing colonies colonization of these lands led to many confrontations between Europeans and American Indians who had been living there for thousands of years this Clash of cultures would mean great gains for some and great losses for other
