California is home to thousands of elementary middle and high school as well as many witches and universities take a closer look at how our great educational system started and how it has grown and changed over time Olive man Isabel started the first school in Calif for the children of settlers back in 1846 it was in Santa Clara when California was a territory of Mexico in 1850 the same year that California became a state the first school opened in San Francisco public means available for anyone to use in 1874 California passed the law that said all children must have an elementary education the State Board of Education decides what California students will study as a Department of Education decides how money from the government will be shared among the many schools when you graduate from high school it doesn't always mean your education is over some people continue on to a trade school or college or university depending on their goals trade schools are places people learn the skills needed to do a specific job colleges are schools where people study After High School universities are the highest level of school from which you can earn a degree Edge agree is a rank or title given to someone who has completed a program of study at a school people go to universities for four or more years and some of them study even longer to enter fields that need a lot of trees your knowledge like the medical field California has two University Systems the California State University system and the University of California or UC system California University Systems have a long history San Jose State University the first school in the California State University system was founded in 1857 it was the first public institution of higher education California other schools in the California State University system include California State University Northridge San Diego State University California State University Sacramento first day of California system opened in 1868 its first classes were held in Oakland but in 1873 it moved to Berkeley before it became the University of California Berkeley other universe State of California campuses include the University of California Los Angeles which is called UCLA the University of California Davis and the University of California Riverside Morty has the largest system of public colleges and universities in the United States so you have a lot to look forward to when you graduate from high school and a lot of choices
